Laurie visits her ancestral roots in the Borders and Midlothian

Heriot & Stow

Laurie Thomas from Canada is visiting Scotland with Genealogy Tours of Scotland to trace her Scottish ancestral roots. Borders Journeys organised an ancestral and sightseeing tour of the Borders and Midlothian where Laurie could walk in the footsteps of her ancestors.

After collecting Laurie in Edinburgh we headed to the Borders. Our first stop was Heriot where Laurie’s Kelly ancestors lived before emigrating to Canada; unfortunately we were not able to find any headstones associated with her family. We next visited Stow where her Kelly and Stewart families lived, again we were unable to locate headstones for her direct ancestors however we did find families associated with her direct ancestors.

Melrose Scott's View

Our next stop was Melrose where Laurie thoroughly enjoyed her visit to the abbey. A visit to Gattonside gave Laurie the opportunity to visit the village where her Hamilton ancestors lived before they emigrated to Canada. No visit to the Borders is complete without a visit to Scott’s View and William Wallace Statue.

Crichton Castle

En-route back to Edinburgh we visited Soutra Aisle, Crichton Castle and Crichton Church.

More photographs can be found on Borders Journeys’ Facebook.

We thoroughly enjoyed organising Laurie’s ancestral tour for her while sharing the beauty, history and culture of Scotland.
