Carol Bossenberry’s Ancestral Tour

Carol Bossenberry HeadstoneWe first met Carol last year when she was visiting Scotland with Christine Woodcock’s Genealogy Tours of Scotland. Carol decided to return to Scotland this year for a tour of the country as well as contacting Borders Journeys for a private ancestral tour.

Our first visit today was New Monklands Kirkyard in Airdrie where Carol immediately ‘hit it lucky’ by locating headstones for her Russell family. In Slamannan we located more Russell headstones along with one for her Shanks family.

Moving on to Doune we spend time in the town and visited the town’s Information and Heritage Centre. The centre is manned by volunteers who were very helpful in assisting Carol with her research from their records. Anyone who has ancestors in the Doune area, we can highly recommend visiting the Doune Information and Heritage Centre in the town centre.

Our next stop was the wonderfully preserved Doune Castle. The castle was built in the late 14th century by the Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland. Ivanhoe, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and more recently the US science fiction series Outlander were all filmed at Doune. The castle also features in Sir Walter Scott’s first novel, Waverley.

We next visited Thornhill Kirkyard where we located several headstones for Carol’s Moir family. Following a lovely lunch at Mhor Bread in Callander, there was time for a browse in the town’s many craft shops.

Our final visit of the day was to Port of Menteith Kirk and Kirkyard on the shores of Lake of Menteith. It was in the kirk that several of Carol’s Moir ancestors were christened before the family emigrated to Canada.

It was a pleasure to meet Carol again and be part of her ancestral journey of Scotland. We wish her a safe journey home after she’s finished her tour of Scotland.

Following her tour Carol wrote ” That was such a great day and a real bonus to actually come across some headstones that are relevant to my research and others that might be connected somehow. I have just looked through my photos and am looking forward to your professional pics.”
