Dumfries House was designed and built in the Palladian style by John and Robert Adam. Finished in 1759, the house was furnished by furniture designed by Thomas Chippendale.
Dumfries House at Cumnock was the private property of the Marquess’ of Bute until 2007. In November 2007 the house and estate were purchased from 7th Marquess by a consortium led by HRH the Duke of Rothesay; this saved the house, contents and estate from being broken up. Today an independent trust, The Great Steward’s of Scotland’s Dumfries House Trust manages the presentation and maintenance of the house along with its collection and grounds.
