Alnwick Castle and Scottish Borders

Scottish Borders & Alnwick Castle - Jedburgh

This tour is available during Alnwick Castle’s opening times between 31st March and 29th October 2017.

We embark on our journey by travelling south through the stunning Scottish Borders, once the inspiration for the great Sir Walter Scott’s writings. Our first stop is Scott’s View – Sir Walter’s favourite view in the Borders, looking down across the Tweed Valley to the Eildon Hills beyond. Nearby we will visit the 21.5 metre high Wallace Monument; the first ever statue erected in commemoration of Scottish patriot and rebel William Wallace.

Continuing south we arrive in the lovely abbey town of Jedburgh, stopping to enjoy a leisurely morning coffee before exploring the town’s 12th century abbey or Mary, Queen of Scots House, dedicated to the life of the tragic monarch. Ten miles south of Jedburgh we cross the border into England at the Carter Bar then travel through the breathtaking Northumberland National Park to Alnwick.

Alnwick Castle is the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Northumberland and home to sumptuous state rooms, a spectacular art collection and magnificent gardens – highlights  include the Ornamental Garden, Poison Garden, Grand Cascade and Treehouse Restaurant. On arrival Harry Potter fans may pause for breath, seeing the spires and towers of Hogwarts rising up in the distance – Alnwick Castle doubled as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films. More recently the castle doubled as Brancaster Castle, in the Downton Abbey 2014 Christmas special – there’s a Downton Abbey Exhibition featuring photography, costumes and props from the filming.

From Alnwick we travel north along the beautiful Northumbrian Coast where there will be an opportunity to stop and admire the long sandy beaches, historic castles and picturesque scenery. We cross back into Scotland at Berwick-up-Tweed and follow the dramatic Berwickshire Coast back to Edinburgh.
