Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites

Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites Exhibition - Borders Journeys

For anyone interested in Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites, I can thoroughly recommend the fantastic exhibition dedicated to them at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The exhibition opened on 23rd June and runs until 12th November 2017.

The exhibition has gathered together over 300 historic objects from public and private collections in Scotland, the wider United Kingdom and Europe. This is the largest exhibition of Jacobite artefacts for many years and includes documents, costumes, jewellery, paintings, weapons and glassware.

Discover the fascinating history of the exiled Stuart Royal Family and the rise of their supporters, the Jacobites. Follow the trials and tribulations of the risings and battles between the Jacobites and the British Government, a struggle that lasted fifty-seven years. Learn about Bonnie Prince Charlie and how he led the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden and how their defeat changed the fabric of Scotland forever.

I find this turbulent period of Scottish history fascinating and was completely captivated by the exhibits on display. Although I spent over three hours in the exhibition, I will definitely be returning to absorb more.

The exhibition will intrigue Outlander fans as Diana Gabaldon’s trilogy of books takes readers back to 1743, the eve of the 45’ Rising that culminated at the Battle of Culloden on 16th April 1746.

Unfortunately, but understandably, there is no photography allowed in the exhibition.
