Dumfries House

Dumfries House Rothesay Woodland Gardens Queen Elizabeth Walled Garden

This tour is available during Dumfries House’s opening times between 1st April and 31st October 2016. Between 1st November 2016 and 31st March 2017, the house is open on Saturdays and Sundays.

The beautiful 18th century stately home Dumfries House was designed and built in the Palladian style by John and Robert Adam and furnished by furniture designed by Thomas Chippendale. Until 2007 the house and estate was the private property of the Marquis of Bute. In November 2007 the house and estate were purchased from 7th Marquis by a consortium led by HRH the Prince of Wales which saved the house, contents and estate from being broken up. Today an independent trust, The Great Steward’s of Scotland’s Dumfries House Trust manages the presentation and maintenance of the house along with its collection and grounds. Within the stunning grounds boast a walled garden, 500-tree Arboretum, a woodland walk network and an adventure playground. The Coach House Café serves delicious snacks and meals all day.

Leaving Dumfries House we travel south into Dumfriesshire passing through the beautiful hills and glens that surround Wanlockhead, Scotland’s highest village, and Leadhills, famous for lead mining.

* At the time of booking there is the option to shorten our visit to Dumfries House and combine it with a visit to Drumlanrig Castle, the Dumfriesshire ancestral home of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry.
