Jo Ann & Sue’s Ancestral Tour

Jo Ann & Sue at Dumfries & GallowayJo Ann and Sue from the USA are visiting Scotland with Christine Woodcock’s Genealogy Tours of Scotland to research their ancestral heritage. The ladies contacted Borders Journeys to organise an ancestral and sightseeing tour for them to Dumfries & Galloway.

Travelling from Edinburgh to Dumfries & Galloway we stopped to admire the stunning Dalveen Pass. At Thornhill we stopped at Thomas Tosh for morning coffee and cake. Continuing our journey we stopped at Maxwelton Chapel to photograph the pretty chapel and surrounding parkland. We were fortunate to meet Max, the caretaker, who invited us into the chapel where he gave us a tour of the stunning interior.

At Moniaive we visited The Moniaive Chocalatier where we purchased some of their fantastic ‘tartan chocolate’. The shop is ‘Chocolate Heaven’ for any chocoholics. Continuing our journey we travelled through the Galloway Forest where we stopped at Clatteringshaws Loch to view the stunning scenery then had a delicious lunch in the café there. A theme was beginning to emerge, what had started as an ancestral and sightseeing tour was developing into a gastronomic tour!

Arriving in Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town, we visited the town’s kirkyard. From their research, Jo Ann and Sue knew that their McCracken ancestors were buried in Wigtown Kirkyard. Unfortunately we were unable to locate any family headstones, however Jo Ann and Sue were delighted to visit the kirkyard where their ancestors now rest. Leaving Wigtown we visited Glenluce and New Luce Kirkyards. Our final stop of the day was a visit to the ruins of the 12th Century Cistercian Abbey at Glenluce.

It was a pleasure to meet Jo Ann and Sue and be part of her ancestral journey. We wish them much luck with their ancestral research.
