Nancy & Joan’s Ancestral Journey

Nancy & Joan at Hermitage CastleNancy and Joan from the USA were visiting Scotland with Christine Woodcock’s Genealogy Tours of Scotland to research their Scottish ancestral heritage. The ladies contacted Borders Journeys to organise an ancestral and sightseeing tour so they could visit the areas associated with their ancestors in the Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway.

Travelling from Edinburgh our first stop was Hawick where Nancy’s Elliot ancestors originated. Both ladies were keen to visit a traditional woollen mill to purchase Scottish cashmere and woollen products. Nancy and Joan thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Johnstons of Elgin mill shop followed by morning coffee and delicious homemade scones and cakes in the café.

Leaving the mill we visited Hawick Museum and Wilton Park. From Hawick we travelled through some of the remotest scenery of the Scottish Borders between Hawick and Newcastleton. En-route we visited the 14th century Hermitage Castle which was key to controlling the Scottish Middle March (Borderland between Scotland and England). The castle is a breathtaking eerie ruin, set in a lonely spot with a history filled with intrigue, murder, torture and treason. One local described the castle as “sod-off written in stone”!

Following a visit to Castleton Cemetery we visited the wonderful Liddesdale Heritage Centre and Museum in Newcastleton where the ladies learned more about the social history and culture of their ancestors. Afterwards we had a lovely lunch in the town’s Olive Tree Café.

From Newcastleton we travelled to Langholm then on to Corrie where Joan’s Corrie ancestors originated from. From Corrie we headed back to Edinburgh via Lockerbie.

It was a pleasure to meet Nancy and Joan and be part of their ancestral journey. We wish them a safe journey home after completing further ancestral research in Edinburgh.
