Robert Burns, Culzean Castle and Dumfries House

Robert Burns House, Culzean Castle & Dumfries House

This tour is available during Dumfries House and Culzean Castle’s opening times between 1st April and 31st October 2017.

In 1759 Robert Burns was born in the small Ayrshire village of Alloway, here he spent the first seven years of his life. The award-winning Robert Burns Birthplace Museum offers an insight into the life and times of Scotland’s National Poet. Nearby, we will visit the Burns Mausoleum, then travel to the locations of Burns’ poem Tam o’ Shanter, from the auld Kirk where the witches dance, to Brig o’ Doon, where Nannie the witch chases Tam on horseback in the final verse.

A short drive takes us to Culzean Castle, perched dramatically on a clifftop above the Ayrshire coast. Once the ancestral home of the Kennedy family, the Marquis of Ailsa gifted the castle to the National Trust in 1945. An apartment on the top floor was given to President Eisenhower in recognition of his role as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during the Second World War. We’ll explore the castle, its grounds and charming visitor centre before enjoying lunch in the estate’s Home Farm Restaurant.

Leaving Culzean Castle we travel to Dumfries House, stopping briefly at Crossraguel Abbey where the warrior King of Scots, Robert the Bruce was christened.

The beautiful 18th century stately home Dumfries House was designed and built in the Palladian style by John and Robert Adam and furnished by furniture designed by Thomas Chippendale. Until 2007 the house and estate was the private property of the Marquis of Bute. In November 2007 the house and estate were purchased from 7th Marquis by a consortium led by HRH the Prince of Wales which saved the house, contents and estate from being broken up. Today an independent trust, The Great Steward’s of Scotland’s Dumfries House Trust manages the presentation and maintenance of the house along with its collection and grounds. Within the stunning grounds boast a walled garden, 500-tree Arboretum, a woodland walk network and an adventure playground. The Coach House Café serves delicious snacks and meals all day.

A tour to Dumfries House is available all year round. See our Dumfries House tour page for details.
