St. Andrews and East Neuk of Fife

St. Andrews Castle. Old Golf Course & Falkland Palace

Our tour begins by making a short stop in the historic town of South Queensferry where you can admire the magnificent three bridges crossing the Firth of Forth – Forth Bridge (1890), Forth Road Bridge (1964) and Queensferry Crossing (currently under construction and due to open in 2017).

Travelling north we arrive in the historic town of St. Andrews, famed worldwide for its ancient university and golf courses. The University of St. Andrews was founded in 1413 and is both the third oldest English-speaking university in the world and one of Scotland’s four ancient universities. The town is regarded as the ‘home of golf’,  its famous links have frequently been used for ‘The Open’. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R & A), founded in St. Andrews in 1754, is the legislative body for golf around the world (apart from America and Mexico).

You will have plenty time to explore the ruins of St Andrews’ Cathedral & Castle, University Museum, Old Golf Course and British Golf Museum. Ice-cream connoisseurs will be drawn to the famous Jannetta’s Gelateria, a St. Andrews institution.

Leaving St. Andrews we travel along the East Neuk of Fife, passing through the picturesque fishing villages of Crail, Pittenweem, St. Monans and Elie. We will stop in Anstruther to explore the historic harbour and the town’s Scottish Fisheries Museum.

Our final visit will be to the ancient town of Falkland, nestled at the foot of the Lomond hills. Here there will be time to explore the beautiful town and the 15th-century Falkland Palace, former home of the Stewart Kings of Scotland.

* Falkland Palace is open to the public from 1st March to 31st October 2017.
