Stirling Castle, Bannockburn and Deanston Distillery

Stirling Castle, Bannockburn and Deanston Distillery

The wonderfully preserved Doune Castle was built in the late 14th century by the Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland. Ivanhoe, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and more recently the US science fiction series Outlander were all filmed at Doune. The castle also features in Sir Walter Scott’s first novel, Waverley.

A short drive takes us to Deanston Distillery. The distillery began life as a cotton mill before being converted into a whisky distillery producing a Highland Single Malt Whisky. Your tour guide will escort you through the distillery’s production area, here you will discover how whisky is produced. The tour ends with a ‘wee dram’ of Deanston’s famous single malt whisky. The gift shop stocks a range of single malts and blended whiskies.

Leaving the distillery we travel to the National Wallace Monument which commemorates William Wallace ‘Braveheart‘. The monument, in the form of a tower, stands on the Abbey Craig from where Wallace is said to have watched King Edward I of England’s army assemble before the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. Following a visit to the monument, there will be time for lunch in the nearby Legends Coffee House.

Close by we will visit Stirling Castle which dates from the early 12th century. Most of the buildings in the castle date from the 15th and 16th centuries when it was the principal royal residence of the Stewart Kings of Scotland. There will be time for you to explore the castle and discover more about its royal and military history.

Our final stop will be Bannockburn Visitor Centre. Bannockburn was the scene of one of the most decisive battles of the Wars of Scottish Independence, it was here that the army of King Robert I of Scotland ‘Robert the Bruce‘ defeated King Edward II of England in 1314.
